On A Psychedelic Trip with The Black Angels

February 5, 2013 Artist News No Comments

The Black AngelsThe Black Angels are musical wizards. But rather than wielding wands, the Austin, Texas-based rockers prefer to mix psychedelic sounds in cauldrons full of dark flavors and politically charged lyrics, and on their upcoming release, Indigo Meadow, they further perfect this magical recipe. The fourth full-length album from the Psych-Rock group — available in stores and online April 2 via Blue Horizon — takes the band’s proclivity for southern psychedelica to new heights of creativity and experimentation, and that means one epic trip for us all.

Formed in 2004, The Black Angels have pioneered the post-millennial Psychedelic Rock sound, sharing the stage with groups like Queens of the Stone Age, The Raveonettes, Wolf Mother, and many more, bringing groove-heavy tracks drenched in sludgy guitar tones and ominous organ riffs to an expansive audience hankering for the reminiscent sounds of the 60s.

But amidst all of the dark overtones, the Rock quartet casts light on important issues with its message-driven music. The first single off of Indigo Meadow, “Don’t Play With Guns,” strikes a poignant cultural chord. Penned just days before last year’s mass shooting in Aurora, Colorado, the song’s pertinence is unmistakable. The track, available TODAY in all digital stores, can be streamed exclusively on The Black Angels website and is accompanied by a kaleidoscope-centric video from the group’s YouTube channel, The Black Angels TV.

If the release of Indigo Meadow is not enough to get your Black Angels blood pumping, than you’re in luck — the frenetic foursome is taking their show on the road. Their major North American tour starts April 4th at Athens, GA’s Georgia Theatre, and will feature star-studded support from Allah-Las, Elephant Stone, Hanni El Khatib, and Wall of Death. Tickets went on sale last Friday, and you can go to the band’s website for more information on how to claim yours.

But wait, there’s more! The band will headline the annual Austin Psych Fest (April 26 – 28), which enters its sixth year of mass psychedelic congregation. Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Deer Hunter, Tinariwen, Clinic, and Warpaint are just some of the bands on the festival’s 2013 lineup. Early Bird Weekend Passes are on sale now, and full dates for The Black Angels’ North American tour are listed below.
