January 10, 2014 Freeloader Friday No Comments

Sharon Jones, Give The People What They WantHappy new year, Freeloaders! We’ve missed you. (Ok, we enjoyed our time off too, but we’re happy to be back with a bang.) To start the year off right, we’ve got a big selection of free streams, downloads and music videos to get you your fix.

First up, the super highly anticipated new Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings record. After having to postpone its initial release so that Sharon focus on her health, it’s around the corner, and it’s streaming in full on NPR First Listen. Don’t miss the music video for “Stranger To My Happiness” too, and keep your eyes peeled for the band on some exciting TV shows, including Jimmy Fallon tonight.

The next full stream we have will be perfect to take it up a notch: Grass Is Green‘s fourth album, Vacation Vinny. Then we have a couple of remixes for you: another from one of the most acclaimed albums of 2013, Who Is William Onyeabor? (check out some of our previous Freeloader Fridays for the past ones we’ve shared), and a Neil Davidge vs. Rob Smith remix of Davidge’s upcoming album (which I’m personally very excited about).

Noisetrade has treated us well this week with not one, but two free downloads: Blank Realm and Red Dragon Cartel, and so has Pitchfork with streams of The Casket Girls and Sólstafir. The latter is streaming a cover of Legend‘s “Runaway Train” from a joint EP coming out in February, which also includes Legend covering a Sólstafir song. Then catch two track premieres by San Francisco band POW!, who write all about their fair city in their upcoming record, and Chicago’s Indian, who bring us their first Sludge/Doom record in more than two years on Relapse Records.

We close with a revisited version of The Black Angels‘ “Don’t Play With Guns,” courtesy of Moog Sound Lab, and the latest video for Symphonic Rock band Within Temptation, featuring Howard Jones.

And that’s a wrap, ladies and gents! Happy Friday.
