Local Natives Hit AOL Interface, Remixes Start Pouring In

July 6, 2010 Artist News No Comments

The praise being bestowed upon LA’s Local Natives is thanks, in large part, to the gloriously arranged harmonies and relentless energy that propels Gorilla Manor to places like the #11 spot on NPR’s recently-released Best of 2010 reader’s poll. The rest of the thanks is owed to the band’s stage show, an imposing wall of voices, sweat and roiling vigor. You can hear and see a bit of both on the band’s recent stop in AOL’s LA offices, where the Natives tore through characteristically emphatic renditions of Manor faves “Sun Hands,” “Airplanes,” “World News” and “Wide Eyes.” The performances are available to watch, embed or download over on AOL Spinner.

In other news, the band’s DIY remix site has begun posting submissions. Not surprisingly, the reinterpretations run the generic gamut. Brainbheat’s swimmy ode to ring modulation and Superhumanoids’ chilled out submersion slowly rev “Who Knows Who Cares” to a fulfilling climax. Meanwhile, Ogvidius and Hotrcks take the gang choruses of “World News” in wildly different directions, the former focusing on staccato keys and a gently thumping beat, and the latter recasting the proceedings as a punishing dubstep shakedown. But the submission that’s landed the most attention thus far is the lush, synth-saturated makeover of “Wide Eyes” from Canadian mystery duo Teen Daze. Hear it for yourself below.

The band has already offered up stems from “World News,” “Wide Eyes,” “Who Knows, Who Cares,” and “Camera Talk,” the lone availability that hasn’t already been represented on the remix site. Later this summer another batch of stems will be made available to prospective remixers, and the finest submissions will continue to be posted on the band’s site.
