Introduction |
 |
Welcome to another Daily Rind Newsletter, full of great new music from some of our favorite artists. Our Featured section boasts two stalwarts of their respective genres - ISIS, gods of the prog-epic-metal genre, and Company Flow, who are arguably the originators of indie underground hip-hop. We're offering some coveted free tracks this week, with cuts from two of the most anticipated albums of the spring, Passion Pit's Manners and Au Revoir Simone's Still Night, Still Light. Not to mention some digital debuts of oldies but goodies, like the Roger Daltry-fronted LSO performance of "I'm Free" from the 1972 rock opera Tommy, a remix of one of the most popular songs of the nineties, Us3's "Cantaloop" and a new one from Factory Records' faves The Durutti Column. Check out videos from wildman King Khan and his Shrines and a behind the scenes look at DJ Green Lantern doing his thing. Speaking of Green, his protégé Johnny Polygon is Bubbling Up this week, along with some young bands on cred-worthy indie labels Paper Bag, Barsuk and Gigantic. And as always, there's lots more In Stores Now and Coming Soon!

Having been on the forefront of the progressive metal scene for over a decade now, L.A. stalwarts Isis have managed to pump out landmark records like a well-oiled machine, each one more unique and daring then the last. With Wavering Radiant, out last week via Ipecac Recordings, the group have released their most cohesive and challenging work yet.
Their first full length in over two years, it marks yet another push towards the unexplored, solidifying a career in adaptation and transformation. Acting as the culmination of twelve years spent unleashing backbreaking riff-age and sonic explorations of light & dark, Radiant sees the colossal five-some moving beyond the visible spectrum of rock. Blissfully melodic, frighteningly dense - the album is an epic conflict between worlds of beauty and the darkest of demons.
Its seven tracks clock in at a total of 54 minutes. Less tracks than they are portions, they flow together as subsections to one massive piece. Also featuring a guest appearance from Adam Jones of Tool fame on two tracks, their latest Ipecac release finds the group displaying an unparalleled sense of maturity and a mastery of their instruments, officially making them grizzled vets of a genre fated to be at their mercy for years to come.

Out of print since 2006, Def Jux is proud to announce that a remastered version of Company Flow's seminal album Funcrusher Plus hit stores last week, back by demand from the populus. The debut masterpiece from influential underground rappers El-P, Mr. Len and Bigg Jus has garnered accolades since its original pressing in 1997.
Funcrusher Plus set a new precedent and was deemed one of the most influential releases in the 90's. Company Flow fought against mainstream hip hop by utilizing wordplay rooted in their political and societal perspectives. And, unlike other artists of their time who relied on jazz and funk samples to carry the weight of an album, they turned to original lo-fi gritty beats, an approach which strongly impacted the underground scene.
Since their break up in 2000, each of the members has worked on independent projects. El-P started Definitive Jux Records, Mr. Len created Dummy Smacks Records and Bigg Jus has released works on both Big Dada and Mush Records. The long awaited re-release, twelve years in the making, features rare early tracks such as "Corners 94" and "Juvenile Techniques". |
