The Orchard and IODA have always shared the same DNA: we build technology to empower the people and companies that create the music and films that we love. We were both born out of digital, way before digital was a meaningful business to most others, so we were (and still are) highly focused on creating efficient and effective distribution platforms.
Our singular goal is, and always has been, to provide high value and impeccable service to our clients. On a macro level, we recognize that we have a responsibility as advocates for independent content creators, and we will continue to be a voice and a force to ensure their needs are addressed. We’ll continue to create more products and services around distribution, marketing and sales to benefit our clients.
Richard Gottehrer, co-founder of The Orchard, loves to remind us that our tagline during our early years was “A Place To Grow.” As we started working with larger independent labels we dropped the tagline (although Richard will argue that even the most sophisticated of businesses still has room to grow), but we’ve never stopped growing the opportunities for our clients. We want our clients — new and old — to have better opportunities to grow their audiences and businesses, which will enable them to spend more time making music, music videos and films.
The Orchard will continue to be a pioneer and a devoted partner to our clients as we combine these two great companies.

Bad day… so both companies are no longer really independent. Additionally, it seems as though both companies will now only be focusing on big clients. Not really sure this is great for the industry. Sony obviously needed the companies to merge.
As a music publisher, I have benefited considerably in dollars and cents from The Orchard’s mechanical licensing module. As a label, I am both a direct licensor to iTunes (4 titles) and a client of IODA (the same 4 + 38 other titles). My iTunes income still dwarfs my IODA income.
I am heartened by this news, though sad at Kevin Arnold’s change of status.
2011 was extremely challenging in the paid download community and 2012 is looking no different. I am all for independence … I have the ability to pick up my marbles and play elsewhere … but what is manifestly required now is robustness, in both platform(s) and ability to achieve fairness in the marketplace.
