Red Baraat is Red Hot and On Top of The “World”

Red Baraat Release Shruggy JiIs bigger really better? In the case of Red Baraat, yes — yes it is. The Brooklyn-based 8-piece band combines an assortment of styles — Indian Bhangra, New Orleans Big Band, Jazz, and Go-Go — into an infectious sound that seeps into your skin and refuses to let you stand still. Led by Sunny Jain on the dhol (a double-headed drum, which Jain plays like it owes him money), the group is capable of some intense live shows, even transforming the NPR Music Offices into a party. The rambunctious octet recently released its newest record, Shruggy Ji (via Sinj Records), and all it did was top both the Billboard Current World Albums and iTunes World Music charts. Now, that’s a cause for celebration!

Just percussion and horns, the all-acoustic group brings enough raw energy to their live show to overpower any plugged-in Rock band. With an eclectic musical sound and an impressive tour schedule — the group played over 100 shows in 2012 — they’re quickly becoming one of the best party bands in the world. Red Baraat‘s U.S. tour launches January 24 in D.C. and will see the band travel the entire country in 2013, including headlining shows at New York’s Bowery Ballroom and L.A.’s Bootleg Theatre. So if syncopated grooves and dizzying brass solos are your thing, you should hop over to their website for more scoop on tickets.

Red Baraat is also joining forces with NOLA-funk band Galactic, playing the epic Lundi Gras show (a truly raucous event) at Tipitina’s on February 11. Continuing the Mardi Gras party, the dhol n’ brass masters will escort Big Chief and jam with the Mardi Gras Indian Orchestra at the Hi-Ho Lounge — all in the same day. Whew, I’m exhausted just talking about it. Get the full tour dates below and stream the entire record on the Bhangra-funk band’s website while you’re looking.
