Who here remembers that time a fan spray painted, “God Listens to Slayer” onto a religious billboard? Slayer fans conform to no rules, and neither does the band itself. Here at The Orchard, the first time I ever heard Metal music was through Slayer’s Spotify page, and it was definitely an eye-opening experience! As I’ve become more acquainted with their sound, I’ve grown to understand just how much of a huge market this genre of music has, as well as the dedication and love from those who support them.
Slayer has an enormous international cult following, one that put their latest album Repentless, released September 11 via Nuclear Blast, on top of the charts worldwide. According to the United World Chart, Media Traffic’s amalgamation of official album sales charts from dozens of principal countries around the world, Repentless was the #2 best selling album in the world last week.
To that I say: rock on my Slayer friends, rock on!
The album scored a Top 10 debut in 25 countries, Top 5 in 14 countries, and made career-highest debuts in the United States (#4 on Billboard’s Top 200 Albums!), U.K., Germany, The Netherlands and New Zealand. The video for the lead single “Repentless,” featuring the frightening Danny Trejo and Tony Moran, has also amassed more than 4 million views on social media upon its release, with the numbers rising every day. It’s a song full of heavy drums, insane guitar solos and a vibe that will have you yelling all your problems away as you head-bang to every beat. This achievement comes to Slayer thirty-two years into their recording career and goes to show many aspiring artists that to make it in this industry, it’s all about putting out great records and persevering. One thing is for sure, time has only made their sound and music stronger than ever.
In response to their overwhelming success, Slayer and Nuclear Blast released the following statement: “The entire Nuclear Blast global team thanks Slayer and their loyal fans everywhere for the tremendous first-week success for Repentless,” said Gerardo Martinez, NB’s General Manager, USA. “Slayer made an amazing album that stayed true to who the band is, and the fans’ overwhelming response is proof of that.”
