La Strada Debut Classy 99 Dollar Music Video

February 23, 2009 Artist News No Comments

The new sensation out of (you guessed it!) Brooklyn, La Strada just debuted their brand spankin’ new music video for “The Sun Song.” The fuzz-folkies collaborated with 99 Dollar Music Videos to produce the star studded, multi-million dollar Spike Jonze directed music video! But seriously, the site has a noble cause; they help the best and brightest indie bands create quality music videos for just 99 dollars (even CNN and peers are stoked). Other artists getting in on the action include Lowry (Engine Room Recordings) and Project Jenny, Project Jan (Might Records). The video combines the septet’s penchant for the European-style accordion music you might expect to hear on la strada with the picturesque New York City backdrop they call home. If you are like us here at the Rind and wonder how it could have been made for just 99 bones, direct your attention to the included behind-the-scenes clip. Both tasty videos are available for you, oh faithful reader, after the jump.

Guilty Pleasures, Here We Come!

Various Artists
Guilt By Association Vol. 2 / Engine Room Recordings / BUY

While we here at the Rind feel pretty firmly that one need not feel guilty for liking cheesy pop songs (seriously, you should see some of our playlists), the idea behind this second volume of covers from Engine Room is a great one – indie artists cover their favorite songs that others might deem “un-indie” and therefore “uncool.”

Move over Marilyn Manson, because Shara Worden (My Brightest Diamond) delivers a totally creepy version of the Soft Cell classic “Tainted Love,” making it sound more like a spy theme than a new wave song. Check it out here. Speaking of new wave, Rafter’s take on the OMD hit “If You Leave” is sparse in a good way, while Cassettes Won’t Listen offers an electro-poptastic version of INXS’ “Need You Tonight.” … Continue Reading

Allow Us To Point Westward Toward Lowry

July 30, 2008 Artist News No Comments

On the weekend of August 7-8-9, the inaugural All Points West Music & Arts Festival will take place at Liberty State Park in Jersey City, New Jersey . Among the headliners are Radiohead, Ben Harper, Jack Johnson and our cherished duo Mates of States. They’re all great acts, but allow us to direct your attention to the band at the very bottom right of the flyer above.

A 5-piece from Brooklyn, Lowry plays Americana infused folk-rock tunes with harmonica, cello, banjo, and piano — and they’re great. Their sophomore album Love Is Dead isn’t expected until later this Fall, so don’t miss the chance to check out some of the new songs live. Lowry kicks off the festival on Friday the 7th.
