“Don’t play the saxophone. Let it play you.” ~ Charlie Parker
Bouncing off of that: Relax with some cool Jazz led by the sound of a warm and scornful saxophone, accompanied by a swinging piano, piccolo bass and drums, and the final touch of a good glass of red wine (of course! I am French)… wow, now that’s heaven! So maybe now we can tweak the quote to: “Don’t play with Tia Fuller; let her play you!”
Don’t let yourself be fooled by the “angelic” — this saxophonist, composer and bandleader is a women of power, and she isn’t afraid to show it in Angelic Warrior, her new album. Get transported by her Gospel, Funk and R&B sound, accompanied by guests like John Patitucci, Terri Lyne Carrington, Dianne Reeves, Shamie Royston, Mimi Jones and Rudy Royston.
But while she is a warrior, Tia Fuller also incorporates the peaceful demeanor of an “angel” in the album. Angelic Warrior is a tribute to the angels of her life: her family and friends. Throughout the album, which Tia also produced, these angels inspire her, and even join her! Behind piano and drums are Tia’s sister Shamie Royston and brother-in-law Rudy Royston, who have their own dedicated track: “Royston’s Rumble.”
Before this, Tia spent five years in Beyoncé’s band, developing a heightened focus in editing, mixing and mastering that served her well in the production of Angelic Warrior. And as the Assistant Musical Director for Esperanza Spalding’s Radio Music Society touring band, Fuller applies her Pop and Jazz chops on behalf of some of the hottest artists in music today.
The originals for Angelic Warrior were put together in 5 months, while Tia was on the road, using her own voicemail as recorder (a symbol of her modernism!). This third release by the sexy saxophonist will be available on September 25 on Mack Avenue Records, and believe me, you won’t be disappointed! (But make sure you grab that glass of wine first!)
Here’s a preview for you in the meantime: 3 songs from Tia’s Angelic Warrior. You can also catch her on tour, from New York to Germany, then back again to North Carolina. Tour dates below:
