Seeing the World Differently with HBO and Vice

Vice-HBO-Season-2The Sync Licensing industry can often be a fast paced, getcha’ in, getcha’ out, move on to the next project kind of world. Especially as more music is being licensed to more outlets, we don’t often get the time to become as attached and invested in our projects as we would like to.

This year, however, we got a great opportunity to showcase our catalog while working closely with HBO’s sophomore news-magazine series, Vice, scoring six placements over the course of this season’s 10 episodes featuring labels like Band of Locksley, Xao Productions, Babygrande, Music of The World, and Caltex Records.

One of the interesting challenges about having a catalog as big as The Orchard’s is being able to comb through it all to find exactly what you are looking for — especially when you’re looking for songs that are very regionally specific and often times in foreign languages. For this season of Vice, we worked on episodes that covered sixteen different countries and many of the cultural subdivisions in each. Along the way we found music from Brazil, Afghanistan, El Salvador, Georgia and Armenia, Azerbaijan, Pakistan, Korea and Japan — and that was just scratching the surface.

Working on projects such as these not only challenges us creatively, but also show the world of possibilities for all music when it comes to licensing. Back catalog, traditional music and b-sides always seem to come into play and prove just as important as their popular counterparts.

We’re proud to have had such a great run working with our many contributing labels and the team at Vice this season. If you’re not familiar with the show, you can check out the first two seasons of one of the most thought-provoking and transformative news blocks on television now on HBO Go.
