Circumambulate Around True Widow

CircambulationIf there’s one valuable lesson that True Widow can teach us, it’s that you shouldn’t fix what isn’t broken. This is the motto of their third album Circumambulation that’s out this week via Relapse Records. Indeed, the Dallas trio has stayed true to its hybrid stoner-rocker and shoegaze sound that characterized the previous two records, while changing some of the pace to a more upbeat tone. What’s even better, you can stream the full album online for free via Pitchfork Advance for another few days… so take advantage!

To give a little historical background, the term ‘shoegaze’ arose in the 1980s but isn’t a genre we commonly hear about in the mainstream music world. The name was created because reports in the U.K. noted that musicians in these bands tended to stand very still throughout their performance. Influenced by groups such as My Bloody Valentine and Slowdive, shoegaze bands use guitar effects and undifferentiated vocal melodies that blend into the sounds of the guitar. The melodies that exist underneath the layers of vocals and guitars give the music a processional rhythm feel. This type of music began to decline in the mid 1990s when the American grunge scene took over, but it’s seen a recent resurgence in the 2010s and is sometimes also called ‘nu-gaze.’

These qualities, which we find in Circumambulation, are different to the type of brighter music we typically see in summer releases, but that doesn’t mean this album isn’t the perfect companion for your summer activities. Tracks are lined with intertwining melodies and indistinguishable vocals, which make it easy to zone out and relax. This record is something you want to put on during a long car ride home, after you’ve spent a leisurely day in the sun, when you feel tired yet satisfied and are reflecting on the day behind you. It’s entrancing, melodic, and sure to please.
