Freeloader Friday: Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings, Whistlejacket & More

Sharon Jones Holiday Party Album ArtWelcome back, everybody! Missed you last week but I’m sure you can agree that the holiday break was as much enjoyed as it was needed. This week, we’re back in action and we’ve got a lot to catch up on so keep reading for the freshest picks from The Orchard!

From one holiday to the next, Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings are ready for Christmas and this new music video proves it. Their new version of “White Christmas” fills the traditionally solemn song with glowing, honest-to-goodness holiday cheer and — nothing against Bing Crosby, but — this is the version I’ll be playing for the rest of the year.

I had not heard of Whistlejacket before today. Making my way to the London-based psych-gaze band’s Facebook page, I found one of their musical influences to be pizza” and, honestly, they won a new listener on that alone. Whistlejacket‘s latest track, “Stay – N,” is a quintessential gray-sky rock song marked with foggy, washed out vocals. Grab an umbrella and give a listen.

Third, we have “Sgoraet,” from Russian electronic artist, Kedr Livanskiy. After an introduction of whirling electronic sounds and intricately computed rhythms, a single voice emerges from the shadows. My American ears can’t translate Kedr‘s lyrics but the pulsating, synth-laden aesthetic communicates volumes. A feeling of alienation is aggravated by a breakbeat-induced frenzy, pushing the track to an end.

As always, feel free to share your favorites with a comment below or a tweet! Thanks and see you again next week.
