Freeloader Friday: The James Hunter Six, Sarah Neufeld & More

James Hunter Six Album Cover Hold OnAttention Orchardites! Pause your ultimate Bieber playlist. Stop trying to sing like Adele. And for goodness’ sake, take a break from copping Drake’s crazy-uncle-at-your-annual-Thanksgiving-party dance moves. It’s Freeloader Friday and it’s time for me to show you what’s new at The Orchard. Check out this week’s highlights below.

First up, get a taste of The James Hunter Six. A recent addition to the famed Daptone Records family, James Hunter is a self-proclaimed “R&B troubadour” whose music bears the authentic Rhythm & Blues sound that you might first associate with the greats of decades past. With performances on Letterman, Leno and Conan’s shows, tours with the likes of Aretha Franklin and Etta James and multiple Grammy nominations, James Hunter has got nothing to prove — only a brand new, soulful track to share, “(Baby) Hold On.”

Sarah Neufeld, violinist of Canadian Indie-Rock band Arcade Fire, has a solo debut album coming up soon and thanks to Stereogum, we get a sneak peak. The title track, “The Ridge,” is an undefinable cross between Indie-Rock and Classical Chamber music that offers moments of both frantic darkness and blissful light. Stitched together by an incessant thread of violin and buttoned up by the beats of Arcade Fire bandmate and drummer, Jeremy Gara, Sarah‘s new track is a must listen.

For those more attracted to a danceable beat and Pop sonics, check out Lucas Nord‘s latest single, “Faking.” Building upon a relaxed four-on-the-floor beat, the Swedish songwriter layers on singable melodies and a variety of synthy textures which grow into an unforgettably bouncy chorus. Nord‘s track only strengthens Scandinavia’s reputation as a breeding grounds for great Pop music.
