It’s been a month since our film team was down in Austin but the sun hasn’t set on SXSW: The Orchard and TOPIC have acquired the North American rights to the festival’s Grand Jury Prize winner for Best Documentary, The Work. The film is slated to hit theaters this fall.
America’s prison system has long been controversial, but one group of convicts and civilian volunteers are coming together to make a change. The Work travels through the bolt locked doors of California’s infamous Folsom State Prison to introduce this group to the world. It’s a documentary goes where no one has gone before to to examine the humanity within prison walls and drives viewers to change their idea of rehabilitation.
Directed by court videographer Jairus McLeary and videogame motion capture director Gethin Aldous, The Work is the first documentary for the duo. Check out our full press release on the acquisition here and some coverage from Deadline.
