After securing Bart Layton’s American Animals from Sundance Film Fest earlier this month, The Orchard’s film troops have won big once again, acquiring North American rights to Jeremiah Zagar’s We the Animals. Get ready, theatrical release is slated for 2018.
With an impressive history in documentary film, We The Animals is the first narrative directed by Zagar. The film follows a family in upstate New York consisting of three young boys, a caring mother and an unpredictable, often violent father. They fall in and out of grace and hopelessness, with coming-of-age overtones throughout. After its premiere at Sundance 2018, the movie received the NEXT Innovator Award presented by RuPaul Charles.
We The Animals is adapted from Justin Torres’ autobiographical novel of the same name, which received critical acclaim for its ability to capture intense character development with simplicity. Zagar included Torres throughout the entire filmmaking process, making sure to stay true to the author’s original vision. The film also stars three first-time actors, Evan Rosado, Isaiah Kristian and Josiah Gabriel, each giving a fantastic, genuine performance.
