Mike Varney created Shrapnel Records in 1980 as the first dedicated metal label. With the introduction of the Tone Center and Blues Bureau International imprints, he developed the Shrapnel Label Group into the definitive home of guitar-based excellence, bringing legendary guitarists like Vinnie Moore, Tony MacAlpine, Yngwie Malmsteen, Jason Becker, Marty Friedman and many more to worldwide attention.
We’re excited to share that The Orchard has acquired the label’s 3,000 song catalog, overseeing its digital and physical distribution and making some much-loved and influential releases available for streaming for the first time. These include Chris Duarte‘s Lucky 13, Paul Gilbert‘s Stone Pushing Uphill Man and Indigenous‘s Time Is Coming, among others. In addition, a third of the 322 album titles included in the deal will be made available digitally for the first time.
An opportunity to work with a catalog of this size and scope is both humbling and inspiring, and I couldn’t be happier that The Orchard will now serve as the steward for Shrapnel’s legacy.
