DALE WATSON “Live” on SIRIUS XM Radio’s Willie’s Place Channel on Friday, April 3 at 10PM EST

In celebration of his new album The Truckin’ Sessions: Volume Two on Hyena Records, hardcore honky tonker Dale Watson will be honoring the men and women who drive the big rigs with a free “trucker appreciation” concert on Friday, April 3 at the beautiful Night Life Theater at the Willie’s Place truckstop in Carl’s Corner, Texas.

SIRIUS XM Radio will carry the entire show live on its Willie’s Place channel, SIRIUS channel 64 and XM channel 13, beginning at 10PM EST. There’s plenty of truck parking for drivers rollin’ through Texas, but if you can’t be there in person, tune in for a great night of gear grindin’, truckin’ tunes, along with an exclusive pre-show Dale Watson interview by Dallas Wayne from the SIRIUS XM studios at Carl’s Corner.

A portion of proceeds from the CD sales of The Truckin’ Sessions: Volume Two during the evening’s performance will be donated to the St. Christopher Truckers Development & Relief Fund, a not-for-profit organization that provides financial assistance to professional truck drivers who have medical problems and can not otherwise afford healthcare.

Nina Simone Doc Featuring Rare Live Performances and Interviews Out Next Week!

This incredibly rare, never before released documentary spotlights the woman, the force, the legend Nina Simone at her finest.  Featuring nine classic songs by the Grammy-nominated “High Priestess of Soul,” Great Performances – Live College Concerts & Interviews was recorded in 1968, with the majority of live footage being taken during performances at both The University of Massachusetts (Amherst) and at the alma mater of the great Dr. King, Morehouse College in Atlanta.  With highlights like “To Be Young, Gifted and Black,” “Black Is The Color,” and Nina’s cover of Leonard Cohen’s hauntingly beautiful “Suzanne,” this documentary is both a treat for the avid fan and an excellent introduction to one of the most incredible artists of our time.

Along with the plethora of amazing music that she created (over 40 live and studio recordings that span the genres of jazz, soul, folk, R&B, gospel, and pop music, to be exact), Nina Simone is also highly regarded as one of the most important voices of black America.  Always one to speak out about her feelings towards injustice, she offers strong viewpoints and political statements throughout the intimate interviews that are featured in the film.  Nina Simone: Great Performances – Live College Concerts & Interviews [Artwork Media] will be available exclusively on iTunes February 24th.

Au Revoir Simone to Play PS1 THIS SATURDAY, cover David Bowie

The PS1/MoMA Warm Up series is celebrating ten years! Along with the McCarren Park Pool Parties, the Warm up series – gathering performers, bands and DJs in a Long Island City MoMA annex – is one of the best ways to enjoy music on a hot New York City summer weekend. PJ Harvey, the Scissor Sisters and Fisherspooner have been some of the headlining acts over the past few years.

This Saturday, Williamsburg favorites Au Revoir Simone will take the stage. The day will also include sets by Dorit Chrysler (New York), Danton Eeprom (London), and Egill Sæbjörnsson & Flis (Island).

All Warm Up events gather thousands of people every Saturday afternoon from July to September in the PS1 courtyard, an open air venue that was designed to host artistic performances.

PS1/MoMA Warm Up Series: $10 - THIS SATURDAY starting at 3pm

Au Revoir Simone will then embark for a mini European tour:
July 31 - Ravenna/Italy - Indie Rocket Festival
Aug 1 - Pescara/Italy - Indie Rocket Festival
Aug 3 - Paredes de Coura/Portugal - Paredes de Coura Festival

Aug 7 - Madrid/Spain - Moby Dick
Aug 9 - Barcelona/Spain - Sidecar

In other Au Revoir Simone news, the girls covered David Bowie’s “Oh! You Pretty Things” (off Hunky Dory), for the Life Beyond Mars - Bowie Covered record. You can purchase the song on iTunes by clicking here.

Teenage Jesus Superstar

(image from Pitchfork’s photo stream )

This past Friday, nearly three decades after playing their last show as a “group,” seminal No Wave provocateurs Teenage Jesus & The Jerks played 2 packed-to-the-rafters sets at New York’s Knitting Factory. This unlikely “one-night only reunion” occurred in conjunction with the release of the book No Wave: Post-Punk. Underground. New York 1976-1980, a visual chronicle of the short-lived but highly influential movement by Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore and veteran critical gadfly Byron Coley [Forced Exposure, Spin, The Wire, and many many others]. A “definitive anthology” of the band titled Shut And Bleed is also scheduled to be released later this year via Atavistic Records. In addition to Teenage Jesus’ studio output, which was previously issued by Atavistic as a 12-track, 19-minute collection titled Everything in 1995, it will include previously unissued live recordings, as well as recordings by frontwoman Lydia Lunch’s concurrent project Beirut Slump.

As might be expected, the event drew a fairly impressive assemblage of personalities, from older folk who had seen Teenage Jesus the first time around, to sixteen year old kids who would have been in short pants when the group’s recordings first became somewhat readily available via reissues. The festivities kicked off at the opening of the accompanying gallery exhibit across the street at 73 Leonard St., where original flyers, photographs, magazines, and records were on display, and visitors could bump elbows with various members of bands like The Contortions and The Gynecologists while they perused the photographs. The two authors held court for a while before the oppressive heat and need for nicotine drove most in attendance out into the street prior to the doors being opened.

More after the jump.

Gimmie Indie Rock

So a couple of nights ago a couple of colleagues and I attended the Zach Galifinakis-hosted New York x New York magazine “Indie Rock Trivia Night ” and Les Savy Fav show at The Highline Ballroom. The sting of the rather princely $30.00 entry fee was assuaged by a 46-issue subscription to New York magazine, the prospect of seeing Les Savy Fav live for the first time and, certainly not least, some very generous contributions from some of the good people at Dailyrind, who thought that we could potentially bring home the gold. I’m sorry we let you down, guys.

I’m not one to brag but I think I have a reasonably decent grasp on “indie” trivia. I was born in 1977; I came of age right around the time punk “broke;” I subscribed to all the magazines; bought all the records everybody was supposed to buy; I went to hundreds of shows; I read all the books; I have carried on lengthy, (and occasionally extremely pretentious), conversations about the New Zealand “scene,” Japanese No Wave, African Funk, Quebecois Noise, rare ‘80s hip-hop, and any number of other music geek obsessions. (‘Cause hardcore wasn’t doing it for me no more.) I realize that I am hardly unique in this regard. There are of course millions of people just like me, and I knew full well that quite a few of them were going to be showing up to a shindig where you could win 500 bones for knowing something as obvious as who took the picture on the cover of Slint’s Spiderland .

Les Savy Fav Prove Out, Actually Are Best Live Band Possible

Tim Harrington On Top Of Coachella

Brooklyn’s Les Savy Fav finally released a live album last week. It was recorded on New Years Eve/Early, Early, Early New Years Day, which explains the adorably-inappropriate title, After The Balls Drop, and the disproportionate amount of spirited/drunken covers (Pixies, Love, Misfits!). Considering they’ve been around for a bajillion years, and that they’re easily “the best live band in indie rock*,” it’s sort of hard to believe it took this long for Tim Harrington and company to get around to releasing something like this. That said, we’re in agreement with most everybody that it was well worth the wait.

Head over to Pitchfork for an interview with Tim (subjects: The Wiggles, baby boners, Cezanne), or Daytrotter to hear drummer Harrison Haynes read the epic, alcohol-obsessed liner notes from the digital booklet that accompanies purchases of the album at iTunes.
