Cassettes May Not Be Listening, But We Definitely Are

August 2, 2012 Artist News No Comments

What started as just a bedroom affair resulted in something no one saw coming: Cassettes Won’t Listen.

CWL started in 2004 when Jason Drake picked up a microphone for the first time after years of producing Electronic inspired tracks and instrumental Hip Hop. The result: future fan favorite “Cutting Ballons.” Jason witnessed the MP3 show up on influential blogs and reach #1 on WOXY‘s Top 20, while his fan base steadily grew.

After three albums and a year of remixes for Diplo, Gold Panda and Homeboy Sandman, Cassettes Won’t Listen is back with a brand new EP, Casa. Mastered at the legendary Abbey Road Studios, the 4-song EP shows what CWL has been up to since his last release.

While CWL has grown as an artist (he’s no longer working in his bedroom, that’s for sure!), his defining characteristics — the sparse arrangements, intimate lyrics, vocal quality and use of live drums, guitars and synths — are all still there. We’re sure fans of his earlier work, such as “Paper Float,” will have Casa on repeat!

Can’t wait any longer to hear what CWL has in store? Stream “Ignore It” the first track off the EP on Daylight Curfew.

Cassettes Won’t Listen Make Today A “Perfect Day”

Los Angeles-based multi-instrumentalist and producer Jason Drake, under his longtime moniker Cassettes Won’t Listen, released his new album EVINSPACEY yesterday, and it’s currently streaming in full on AOL Spinner and iTunes Ping.

Listen to EVINSPACEY [Daylight Curfew] on Spinner and on iTunes Ping

The first video from Cassettes Won’t Listen’s new album, EVINSPACEY was shot entirely on an iPhone 4 and was co-directed by Jason Drake and Vedette Lim. The video for “Perfect Day” juxtaposes the song’s theme by placing its central characters in the middle of a desert landscape, asking the viewer to decode the video’s storyline.

Cassettes Won’t Listen is also offering a free mixtape, 101, featuring his recent remixes of Gold Panda, The Death Set feat. Diplo, and Houses along with previous singles and material from EVINSPACEY. Making mixtape history, Ira Glass (This American Life‘s creator and host), lends his distinctive voice to introduce Cassettes Won’t Listen’s musical beginnings. CWL is no stranger to the public radio crowd, having been interviewed by Faith Salie on Fair Game, having hismusic featured on various NPR programs, and recently recording an original theme song for This American Life. CWL will also be performing with his hip-hop side project, The Freeze Tag, on an upcoming airing of WNYC’s Soundcheck.

The title, 101, references both the introduction to CWL’s body of work, as well as the famous Hollywood Freeway that runs through Los Angeles, his newly adopted hometown. The music reaches back to 2008′sSmall-Time Machine, 2009′s Into The Hillside, and finally the new record, EVINSPACEY (the “K” was dropped from the original title after receiving a cease and desist from Kevin Spacey’s legal team).
