April 3, 2012 Artist News No Comments

cornershop milkin itLast April, we flipped out over Cornershop & The Double ‘O’ Groove Of, a welcome fresh blast of sunny UK-Indian boom-bap from the gents who gave us “Brimful of Asha” in 1997. Like a lotus blooming in a South Bronx puddle, they’re back again this Spring with the hip-hop homage, “Milkin’ It” (out next Monday). It’s a preview of their new album, Urban Turban, which drops in May on Ample Play Recordings.

Check the eye-popping clip for “Milkin’ It” (via SPIN), featuring Oakland, CA dudes “turfing.” We tried dancing like this at our cousin’s wedding reception last weekend and the priest called 911.

Cornershop & The Double ‘O’ Groove Of

In 2004, Cornershop leader Tjinder Singh discovered unknown singer Bubbley Kaur working at a local launderette and recruited her to sing on their “Topknot” single. Drowned In Sound called it “an infectious and joyous amalgamation of Punjabi folk, looped guitars, and deliciously mellifluent vocals.” “Topknot” appeared on year-end “best of” lists and attracted the attention of a young M.I.A., who guested on a remix by Caveman [Pulp bassist Steve Mackey].

Fast-forward seven years. On the heels of their 2010 comeback album Judy Sucks A Lemon For Breakfast, Cornershop has enlisted Kaur to sing lead vocals on their entire follow-up LP, Cornershop & The Double ‘O’ Groove Of. Kaur’s beautiful voice and Punjabi lyrics brilliantly complement the band’s summery culture-mashing psych-funk grooves.

The Fader recently premiered their great new video for “Supercomputed,” “a portrait in hyper-defoliation – a high-speed montage of clips (no pun intended) from an East London barbershop.”
