Meshuggah And Cynic Launch Joint Online Video Channel In Support Of Myspace Music Tour

January 28, 2009 Artist News No Comments

Early next month, two of the finest acts in extreme music, the mighty Swedes of Meshuggah and prog-metal forefathers Cynic , will embark on a three week North American tour sponsored by Myspace Music . Both bands continue to pound pavement in support of their most recent releases – Meshuggah, behind their brutal March 2008 offering obZen , and Cynic behind their inspired November 2008 return Traced In Air .

But this run of dates will feature far more than one of the strongest bills in recent memory, as Cynic and Meshuggah announce today the addition of an extra dimension to their tour. Indeed, the bands have joined together to launch an online video channel that gives fans a glimpse into what’s happening on the road, behind the scenes, with regular updates from tour stops, artist-on-artist interviews, and much more.

MP3: Meshuggah – Bleed

In addition to videos uploaded by the bands themselves, Cynic and Meshuggah are opening the channel to their fans, and calling on them to send in footage – camera phone or otherwise – from the shows, documenting their own experience of the tour. All concert-goers need to do is send their shots to , and if accepted, the clips will be available for the entire metal world to see. The channel will be available 24 hours a day on both Cynic and Meshuggah’s websites and Myspace pages. Code to embed the channel on your own websites, blogs, and social networking portals await you after the jump, along with a full itinerary of dates.

Our Favorites Are Your Favorites Too – Part III – Show No Mercy: Pitchfork’s Metal Picks

December 15, 2008 Artist News No Comments

Pitchfork’s Brandon Stosuy published his Top Twenty Metal Albums last month in his Show No Mercy column, and three of our favorite face-melters of the year made the cut!  Weighing in at number six is Enslaved‘s Vertebrae on Nuclear Blast, brilliantly described as, “a smeary, tightly composed collection of progressive psychedelic post-black metal.”

At number ten we have Florida’s tech-minded prog metal elder statesmen, Cynic, with their first album in fifteen years, Traced In Air.  Released via French powerhouse Season of Mist, this reunion album is “a jam-packed, carefully orchestrated King Crimson-style tone poem.”

Darkthrone‘s fourteenth long-player Dark Thrones and Black Flags is sitting pretty at lucky number thirteen.  Stosuy calls the Peaceville release “one hell of a strange and compelling blackened punk collection.”

Check out the full list, along with many of the artists’ own picks, right here.

More Music For Your Babies To Headbang To…

November 10, 2008 Artist News No Comments

We’re just in that sort of mood today. So how about a metal round up? Last week, Thursday and Envy unleashed a weighty split on Temporary Residence, with Rickley and co. reminding us why Full Collapse was such a hit, and the manic-metaloids of Envy offering up three hefty love letters to dynamics and decibels. And, of course, how could we not mention the new Cynic? Fifteen years after the landmark Focus, these Florida prog-hounds are back with Traced In Air , and dare we say, they may have gained a step or two in their time off. Dawn of Winter slow it down on “The Music of Despair”, while superduperHOLYSHITgroup Bloodbath (you gonna argue with members of Opeth, Katatonia, Hypocrisy, and Edge of Sanity?) get deadly on “Slaughter The Will To Live.”

All that. And so much more. Right. Here.

Cynic Return For First Album In 15 Years

October 9, 2008 Artist News No Comments

Reunited progressive metallurgists Cynic — the Floridian forefathers of tech-minded prog metal, and the proud parents of 1993’s landmark Focus — will unveil their first album in 15 years October 28th. Due via French powerhouse Season of Mist, Traced In Air is an eight song tour de force of twisted time-signatures, mind-bending riffs and all-out metal indulgence, building upon the groundwork laid out by the formidable Focus while fortifying and updating a genre the band practically willed into existence a decade and a half ago. Recorded in California with Down knob-twiddler Warren Riker, the current line-up features founding members Paul Masvidal (guitars/clean vocals) and Sean Reinert (drums) along with Sean Malone (bass), and newcomer Tymon Kruidenier (guitars/growls). In other news, the band will support OPETH on their upcoming European trek in November and Decembe, which comes on the heels of their headline performance at this year’s installment of ProgPower Europe. A U.S. tour will follow in early 2009. Current dates and Traced tracklist after the jump.
