News is swarming around the possibility of Apple acquiring 3-D mapping firm C3 Technologies. C3 is famously known for taking streams of ground photos acquired by plane and converting them (via algorithms once used in missile imaging software) into hyper-accurate 3-D renderings of city streets, buildings and terrain down to inner courtyards. This acquisition might have direct implications on an already competitive relationship between Apple and Google.
Additionally, C3 has been working toward collecting real time traffic data, allowing them to integrate their navigation and location systems. C3’s real-time traffic data and 3-D image mapping coupled with Siri stand to give Apple a substantial push towards the world’s most intelligent personal navigation system.
