The Orchard Chart Toppers: June 2014

The Orchard Chart Toppers

It’s been an exciting start to the summer with our chart topping artists and labels! This month, we’re cheering to The Story So Far, who’s currently killing Warped Tour with a number of other Pure Noise artists; San Francisco Symphony, who topped Billboard’s Traditional Classical Albums and Classical Albums chart; and while we don’t usually include Top Tracks in these summaries, we just had to for one particular week on iTunes Brazil, where two of our artists dominated more than half of the Top 20, as well as Julias Moon and Porcelain Black, who came in #1 in their respective Danish and French iTunes genre charts. Last, but certainly not least, Brandon Semenuk’s Rad Company, fresh from our expanded partnership with Red Bull Media House, absolutely killed it on pretty much all related iTunes films charts around the world.

PS. This is only a snapshot of our artists’ chart positions. They’ve also placed in many genre charts on both Billboard and iTunes, but we’ve zoned in on the more general charts for the purpose of this post.

Boost Your Reach with Your Very Own YouTube Billboard

YTBillboardHave a new album or film coming out soon? Of course you do! But do your fans know about it? Pre-release promotion is a no brainer, but ask yourself how you are conveying that message. YouTube is one of the most powerful tools available for making your voice heard, though it’s often underutilized as a promotional tool. Consider your video’s watch page as a virtual, interactive billboard for your message. Creating a simple, yet compelling video announcement can invoke pure excitement among eager fans while allowing you to convert potential sales right off the bat.

Let’s take an album release for example. If you want to draw a genuine response from your audience, they’re going to want a taste of what to expect. Tease a track that fans have never heard before with creative imagery behind the audio. You’ll build up expectations while also leaving your audience wanting more. Time this the right way and your album will already have eager eyes waiting in anticipation for street date.

Aside from giving fans a sneak peak at what you’re promoting, you also have some prime real estate to work with to take care of business. Display vital information like the album title and release date in both your video’s title and description (or burned directly in the video itself). More importantly, give your fans the opportunity to buy the album instantly. You’ve gotten them amped up for the release, now turn that excitement into a sale by including pre-order links in the videos description and in-video annotations.

What if your following isn’t that great on YouTube yet and your fans are more centered around Facebook or Twitter? No problem! This strategy will work there too. Create your video billboard the same way we talked about above, and simply copy and paste the link as a post anywhere else on social media. As long as your vital information is included in the video’s title or burned into the video itself, you’ll get traction anywhere else your fans are. Excited fans will spark up conversation either on YouTube itself or directly in your social posts, all leading up to a strongly boosted street date.

YouTube Really Wants You To Subscribe

YTSubscribeYouTube has hit the streets this month with advertising urging passersby to subscribe to some of its top creators. This is one of the first major physical ad campaigns pushed by the video streaming service specifically promoting channels. New Yorkers have started spotting ads like the giant one pictured left in NoHo as well as in the subway. And YouTube ads are planned to make their way to other cities as well as network TV.

So why does this matter? Well, for one thing, a major push by a mostly internet-based company like YouTube into the “real-world” is something to watch. Although the ads boast multi-million subscriber numbers, most people probably don’t know who these internet “celebrities” are. Likewise, most casual YouTube users don’t even subscribe. The majority of users still rely on the platform simply as a search-and-discover tool. And therein lies the impact of this campaign.

YouTube has been pushing the importance of subscription to both creators and users for some time now. Most recently, YouTube’s Head of Entertainment, Alex Carloss, made a compelling speech on the topic driving home the value of engaging a devoted returning fan base rather than a casual audience. The exact impact that subscribers have on views is still largely debated, but the concept points to a larger shift by YouTube. Deciding to pair a physical ad campaign with major channels and subscription has a feel more akin to network TV. Getting these brands and channels out in the open provides a new level of exposure to channels that normally rely solely on rabid internet sharing for promotion.

It’ll be interesting to see what the impact of this bold move will be on these channels and YouTube as a whole. Though it’s not exactly a complete game changer, it’s interesting to see an apparent shift in user behavior that YouTube may be looking for. This doesn’t necessarily mean you should change what you’re currently doing on YouTube, but you may want to push more focus toward subscribers to see if there’s an impact on your channel. For a quick way to rope in more subs, try enabling your channel’s In-Video Programming settings to ad subscribe links to your channel. See you on the subway ride home, YouTube!
