15 (Humorous) Orchard Predictions for 2013

December 17, 2012 Orchard News No Comments

the orchard 15 anniversaryThis is it… our last 15th anniversary post for the year. It’s been a great one, and as we shared in last month’s post, we’re so very grateful to have these incredible years behind us and such promising prospects ahead.

For this post, we got all Orchardite minds together to assemble our trimmed down 15 most likely predictions for 2013. The product you see below is a carefully crafted selection of scientifically backed probabilities, and we stand behind these insights 100%.

1. Cleopatra will release Sounds Like… The Sound Of Music Meets Gangnam Style.

2. ICQ will launch a major comeback including direct chat lines with your favorite artists.

3. Our Compilations department will invent a new genre called “PUBSTEP,” Irish folk tunes set to dubstep beats. It will become so popular that iTunes will create a new genre page for it.

4. Apple will introduce iChew, described by Phil Schiller as “an amazing leap in chewing gum technology.” Each iChew will be WiFi and Bluetooth enabled, letting you download new flavors from the Cloud, or if you’re an AT&T customer, using your 4G connection. It will be Siri activated by double-chomping with your canine tooth and speaking the flavor you want to download. Within seconds, the iChew will taste exactly like the requested flavor. Each flavor will cost 99 cents, and each stick of iChew will cost $399.99 for the Trident size, $499.99 for a “Hubba Bubba” size.

5. Lychelle [our wonderful receptionist] will forget to send out an email about washing the fruit before consuming and someone will consume before washing.

6. Tee Pee Records will issue a vinyl release with blotter acid in the label ink. Lick, spin and enjoy!

7. One of Richard Gottehrer’s YouTube ideas — a cooking show filmed at CBGB with recipes sung by The Raveonettes — will become so wildly popular that Honey Boo Boo will mention it on her show.

8. We will be approached by a startup that would like to offer our clients the ability to automatically send their fans customized Happy Birthday songs on their birthday. This startup will have just received 6 million dollars in funding.

9. The Orchard’s Got Talent will beat The Voice in a ratings war.

10. What.cd will be heralded as the future of record stores.

11. Microsoft will announce a bold new direction for the Xbox platform: video games.

12. After several more rennovations, the kitchen will become self-aware, reveal itself to be Hal9000, and turn on Mike P. Fueled by its own supply of caffiene and energy drinks, it will begin sabotaging the music distribution operations and give us no choice but to become a vendor of faulty Nespresso machines.

13. Leaps in nano-biotech will result in the RIAA developing a way to infect P2P filesharers with “monkey pox.”

14. Richard Gottehrer will write a new Orchard theme song. Ask him to sing the original.

15. In 2013, people will stop predicting the future.

Observe This: The Raveonettes Announce New Album “Observator”

June 26, 2012 Artist News No Comments

10 years after their formation, the Danish duo of The Raveonettes are excited to announce the release of their new album Observator, out September 11th on Vice Records. Sharin Foo and Sune Rose Wagner have composed a tribute to life, sumptuous and beautiful in its sound, but bleak and sad at its heart.

The album was recorded in California, as the duo was eager to leave New York behind in favor of the fresh Venice Beach vibe, particularly following Sune’s back injury from last summer.

“When you’re a young man and you can’t put your socks on in the morning without being overwhelmed by pain, it can be very demoralizing,” Sune shared. “I could use the California air to get clean, concentrate on writing, and no one would distract me.”

But it wasn’t all fun and games as Sune and Sharin quickly realized… Los Angeles was full of dread and despair that sparked a “wicked loneliness,” said Sune. So, Sune finally threw himself into the real lives of people he encountered in both California and New York and soaked up the stories of both cities.

Mentored by Richard Gottehrer – co-founder of The Orchard and producer for Blondie, Go-Gos, and more — The Raveonettes finally hit the legendary Sunset Sound Studios and recorded Observator in just seven days. The band said this album was the “quickest and easiest album” they have ever done and attributed their inspiration to the people, the occurrences and the relationships around them, rather than to L.A. itself.

Observator is also the first time they’ve ever used the piano, bringing a glorious, gloomy sound to the record and with it a new dimension to The Raveonettes. “We knew immediately that it was something we needed to expand on,” says Sune. “But make no mistake; Observator is still a gorgeous guitar album.”

Get ready… Observator will hit stores on September 11th. Until then, enjoy their first single from the album, “Observations,” available for streaming now on RollingStone.com.

The Orchard + IODA: Better Together.

March 6, 2012 Orchard News 7 Comments

The Orchard and IODA have always shared the same DNA: we build technology to empower the people and companies that create the music and films that we love. We were both born out of digital, way before digital was a meaningful business to most others, so we were (and still are) highly focused on creating efficient and effective distribution platforms.

Our singular goal is, and always has been, to provide high value and impeccable service to our clients. On a macro level, we recognize that we have a responsibility as advocates for independent content creators, and we will continue to be a voice and a force to ensure their needs are addressed. We’ll continue to create more products and services around distribution, marketing and sales to benefit our clients.

Richard Gottehrer, co-founder of The Orchard, loves to remind us that our tagline during our early years was “A Place To Grow.” As we started working with larger independent labels we dropped the tagline (although Richard will argue that even the most sophisticated of businesses still has room to grow), but we’ve never stopped growing the opportunities for our clients. We want our clients — new and old — to have better opportunities to grow their audiences and businesses, which will enable them to spend more time making music, music videos and films.

The Orchard will continue to be a pioneer and a devoted partner to our clients as we combine these two great companies.

We’re Thankful For… 15 Key Milestones at The Orchard

The Orchard is 15 years old! We’ve been on quite a ride since 1997, when things like Google, the iPod, YouTube, music hack days and Facebook didn’t exist. (Can’t wait to see what the next 15 years will bring.)

So, in honor of this birthday, the community of businesses and people that have contributed to our history and the changes we’ve experienced in the music industry, each month we’ll post 15 things that we’re thankful for. Let’s kick it off with some key events:

  1. Richard Gottehrer and Scott Cohen start The Orchard in the Lower East Side of New York City, when the LES was still punk rock (1997)
  2. We’re the first company to supply independent music to online retailer CDNOW (more like CDTHEN) (1998)
  3. Huge one stop Valley Media goes out of business, taking The Orchard’s clients’ CDs with it, and thrusting us into digital
  4. London Calling: We open our European headquarters in London (2003)
  5. iTunes asks, we deliver….. the largest catalog of independent music in the world (2003)
  6. We become the first independent distributor to hit one million paid downloads and streams; that’s a whole lotta customers served (2004)
  7. Since video killed the radio star, its about time we begin to digitally distribute video; we’re among YouTube’s first monetization partners and iTunes’ first independent film deals (2008)
  8. The heat is on – as in heat map! We enhance our client dashboard with the Release Builder content management system and basic marketing and analytics tools (2008)
  9. We add physical distribution to our platform of services, making it much easier for us to market across all retail channels (2008)
  10. Bigger better faster stronger… Deloitte ranks The Orchard as the 66th fastest growing technology company in North America, ahead of Sirius, Constant Contact and RIM (Research in Motion) (2009)
  11. Pitbull’s Orchard-distributed single “Krazy” is certified gold; damn, that’s Krazy (2009)
  12. Continuing the tradition of Orchard CEOs who have great hair, Brad Navin becomes CEO of The Orchard (2010)
