Out Today by The Orchard: TOBi, Amon Amarth & More

Joy Williams, Out Today

What happens when you mix viking death metal with smooth r&b and delicate Americana musicality? A typical Friday at The Orchard. We’re never lacking in variety and this week’s collection of new music is no different.

Talk about a niche, Swedish Viking death metal act, Amon Amarth release their new album Berserker today through Metal Blade. Despite how specific their genre is, Amon Amarth have previously earned #1 spots on German charts and #11 on Billboard’s Top 200. For this album the band traveled across the globe to Los Angeles to work with metal connoisseur Jay Ruston (Anthrax/Stone Sour/Steel Panther). Get ready for the album Exclaim! describes as “f**king exploding with energy.”

At 9 years old, TOBi moved from Lagos, Nigeria to Ottawa, Canada eventually settling in Brampton, just outside of Toronto. In a new environment, thousands of miles away from his friends and family, he found himself inspired by music. Today, he will be playing a Sold Out homecoming show at Velvet Underground in Toronto. In his new album, titled STILL via Same Plate, you’ll hear TOBi’s broad influences including rap, hip-hop and soul. An artist, TOBi is constantly looking to adapt and absorb knowledge and make the world a better place. As he tells Red Bull, “I do have a utopian vision. It might sound far-fetched or idealistic, but there are people everywhere who are actively working to make life easier for people…We just need more of them.” Check outSTILL, and spread the word.

A singer-songwriter with a Bluegrass twist, Joy Williams releases her new album, Front Porch via Sensibility Recordings. A GRAMMY Award winning performer, Joy has seen great success as one half of the Civil Wars and has since taken her own musical journey as a solo artist. Based in Nashville, Front Porch has an intimate feel, welcoming the listener onto Joy’s proverbial front porch. Describing her adaptation of Depeche Mode’s “Enjoy The Silence,” Rolling Stone states, “Williams tackles it with a combination of pristine vocals and bluegrass-worthy instrumentation. Recorded live, the song helps set the stage for this year’s Front Porch, her upcoming solo release.” Take a load off and surround yourself with that contemplative Front Porch feeling.

Have a great weekend and listen to something new.
